Are prop firms legal in India? How the simulated model works

TraderCap Team · 10 September 2026 · 7 min read

Indian traders often ask whether prop firm programs are legal. The answer depends on how the firm is structured. This article explains the common model in general terms and isn't legal advice.

Why Indian prop firms use simulated accounts

Only SEBI-registered brokers can provide exchange trading access, and only registered entities can manage client money or give investment advice. So Indian evaluation platforms sell access to simulation software instead and reward performance under a contract.

What a compliant platform should not do

  • Accept deposits or 'investments'
  • Promise fixed or guaranteed returns
  • Execute trades on exchanges in your name
  • Give buy/sell recommendations

Red flags

  • No registered company details
  • Rules that change after you pay
  • No published payout history
  • Payouts only in crypto or foreign currency

Test your process under fixed risk rules.

Pick a simulated evaluation, read the rules, and trade at your own pace. Most participants do not pass and lose their fee.
